Special recognition of July 2023 as Americans with Disabilities Month in Lake County.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Lake County affirms the principals of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities created by the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, and exemplified by the State of Illinois, to ensure that people with disabilities be fully integrated into the fabric of our society; and
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990 to establish a comprehensive national mandate to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities. It also expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing participation in community life; and
WHEREAS, people with disabilities are three times less likely to be employed, and those who are employed often earn less than their peers for doing the same work; and
WHEREAS, public spaces, including transit, systems, and voting locations, are still often inaccessible for people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, people of all backgrounds contribute to our democracy and strengthen our communities, culture, and economy. These different perspectives and life experiences are greatly appreciated contributions; and
WHEREAS, numerous community organizations and agencies provide valuable resources to people with disabilities, their families and caregivers to promote equal opportunity, economic power, and independent living; and
WHEREAS, Lake County recognizes and celebrates the equal rights and dignity of disabled people everywhere and reaffirms our commitment to building a world where people with disabilities are afforded the opportunities, independence, and respect they deserve.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois that July 2023 hereby be recognized as Americans with Disabilities Month in Lake County and the Lake County Board calls upon residents, employers, scho...
