Special recognition of May 11, 2022 through May 17, 2022 as National Police Week.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, there are approximately 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities throughout the United States, including the dedicated officers of the Lake County Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, in 2020, there were 60,105 assaults against law enforcement officers resulting in 18,568 injuries to law enforcement officers; and
WHEREAS, the FBI reported that, in 2021, 585 law enforcement officers and 21 K9 officers were killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1786, more than 22,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including the 18 members being recognized today from law enforcement agencies in and around Lake County, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, 619 new names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring, reflecting the officers killed in 2021 plus officers who died in previous years, but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now; and
WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy are being honored here today; and
WHEREAS, May 13, 2022 is designated as the Annual Lake County Police Memorial, in honor of all fallen officers and their families, and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, that May 11, 2022 through May 17, 2022 is designated as Police Week in Lake County, Illinois: and
