Special recognition of August 26, 2021 as Women’s Equality Day.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, women in the United States have continuously worked to gain full and equal rights and privileges; and
WHEREAS, Congress has designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, ensuring voting rights for everyone regardless of gender; and
WHEREAS, the ratification of the 19th Amendment marked a decades-long movement by women suffrage-supporters who lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience, leading the way to establish a more democratic country and ensuring equal opportunity for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, observing Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also celebrates the achievements of women’s rights activists and brings attention to the unique daily struggles and continuing efforts towards full equality; and
WHEREAS, women have advocated against gender inequality in schools and the workplace. They have tirelessly fought for equitable pay, educational and career opportunities so that women can enjoy rewarding careers; and
WHEREAS, because of the numerous efforts of heroines over our history, women continue to make significant advancements in every aspect of life including science, education, law, and literature.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, that the Lake County Board does hereby commemorate August 26, 2021 as Women’s Equality Day to celebrate the importance of the women’s suffrage movement and the continued work to secure and expand equal rights.
