SPECIAL RECOGNITION

WHEREAS, Women’s History Month recognizes the extraordinary achievements of women throughout history, acknowledges the obstacles they have overcome, and increases awareness of the importance women have played in the history of our nation; and

WHEREAS, both in the forefront and behind the scenes, women of diverse ethnicity, cultural, and economic backgrounds have made significant contributions that have helped shape the course of the United States; and

WHEREAS, women have consistently demonstrated a resilience and strength to overcome adverse conditions and hardship, and have made sacrifices to ensure that our nation not only survived, but prospered; and

WHEREAS, women have long led the way in establishing a sound and more democratic country by championing basic human rights and ensuring access and equal opportunity for all Americans; and

WHEREAS, 2020 marks the One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment. After a decades-long movement by women suffrage-supporters who lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience, the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920. This amendment allowed eight million women to vote for the first time in history in the November 2, 1920 General Election; and

WHEREAS, women have advocated against gender inequality in schools and the workplace. They have tirelessly fought for equitable pay, educational and career opportunities so that women in our country and throughout the world can enjoy rewarding careers; and

WHEREAS, women have founded many philanthropic, cultural, educational and charitable institutions in the United States; and have contributed substantial time and money to these organizations; and

WHEREAS, because of the numerous efforts of heroines over the history of the United States, both known and unknown, women have made and continue to make significant advancements in every aspect of life including science, education, law, and literature.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, that this County Board of Lake County, acknowledges and celebrates March 2020 as Women’s History Month; and
