Staff Summary

                     On April 27, 2017, cherished and long-serving District 14 Lake County Board Member, Audrey H. Nixon, passed away.

                     Board Member Nixon committed 35 years of her life to public service and Lake County, including serving as the long-time chair of the County Board’s Law and Judicial Committee.

                     As a passionate and dedicated community leader, Board Member Nixon was a champion for justice and a tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion, and programs that transform lives.

                     In November 2012, the Lake County Board authorized the construction of the Lake County Courthouse Expansion Project.

                     The facility design includes a pedestrian bridge that connects the Court Expansion to the Lake County Building at 18 N. County Street.

                     This pedestrian bridge symbolizes Board Member Nixon’s effort to forge cooperation and collaboration among the justice partners and the Lake County Board and staff.

                     Chairman Lawlor requests approval of this resolution to commemorate Member Nixon’s historic and longtime service to Lake County by naming the pedestrian bridge in her honor.

                     This action also approves a new commemorative display at the entry of the bridge that will be designed, installed, and funded through private donations solicited in accordance with the Lake County Ethics Ordinance and the Lake County Procurement Policies.

RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, Audrey H. Nixon was born in Bernice, Louisiana, on July 17, 1935 and passed away on April 27, 2017 at the age of 81; and

 

WHEREAS, the Lake County Board seeks to honor and commemorate her leadership and contributions over 35 years of public service and her commitment to justice, diversity and inclusion; and

 

WHEREAS, through her leadership as District 14 Lake County Board Member and Law and Judicial Committee Chair, the level of collaboration and cooperation grew substantially; and

 

WHEREAS, the naming of the pedestrian bridge in the new Lake County Court Tower is an appropriate recognition for such a distinguished and beloved person; and

 

WHEREAS, the completion of the Lake County Court Expansion Project, which includes a pedestrian bridge, is a significant enhancement to the facilities of the downtown County campus and marks the conclusion of the capital improvement project begun under County Board Member Nixon, and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, hereby names the Court Expansion Pedestrian Bridge in honor of Audrey H. Nixon; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the County Board of Lake County, Illinois directs the display and ceremony to be held to mark the naming of the Audrey H. Nixon Pedestrian Bridge.
