Staff Summary
* The A Way Out Program is sponsored by the Lake County Opioid Initiative. The Initiative is a collaborative effort to assist individuals with substance use or addiction by offering a county-wide network that provides encouragement and support to assist persons through the rehabilitation process.
* The program objective is to facilitate substance use treatment and rehabilitation and to deflect eligible persons from the criminal justice court system.
* The A Way Out Program encourages individuals (with no pending criminal charges) seeking substance use rehabilitation who present at a cooperating police agency and turn over any drugs (prescription and illegal) and drug paraphernalia to the police department to do so without fear of arrest for the possession of the substances and drug paraphernalia.
* The cooperating police departments are: Antioch, Deerfield, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Park, Lake County Sheriff's Office and Zion.
* The cooperating police agencies agree to destroy all collected drugs and paraphernalia and assist the eligible persons to take the first steps toward sobriety by contacting the Lake County Crisis Line, requesting the Lake County Health Department conduct a telephone screening, and provide appropriate treatment service referrals.
* The Lake County Opioid Initiative community treatment and rehabilitation partners include: Live4Lali, Advocate Hospitals Condell and Good Shepherd, Vista Health System; treatment centers Gateway and Rosecrance; Nicasa and Omni Youth Services.
