Joint resolution authorizing, an application with the Illinois Department of Transportation for a Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant in the amount of $113,013.20 for fiscal years (FY) 2017 - 2018.

Staff Summary
* The Sheriff's Office would like to apply for an Illinois Department of Transportation STEP grant in the amount of $113,013.20.
* The main objective of the grant is to conduct specific traffic enforcement campaigns that will make the roadways safe and to provide financial assistance for purchasing traffic enforcement equipment.
* Traffic enforcement campaigns include roadside safety checks and as well as impaired driving enforcement.
* The grant requires six mandatory enforcement campaigns and up to four optional enforcement campaigns; we will conduct all mandatory enforcement campaigns and three of the optional campaigns.

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, said roadside safety check campaigns held in FY2015 - 2016 led to a total of 1,502 citations being issued, 336 of those citations were seat belt violations and 55 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests; and,

WHEREAS, said roadside safety check campaigns held through February 2017 led to a total 370 citations being issued, 112 of those citations were seat belt violations; and 16 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests; and,

WHEREAS, the Lake County Sheriff's Office believes that continuing to conduct these traffic enforcement campaigns in FY2017 - 2018 will continue to keep the roadways safe; and,

WHEREAS, said grants will fund the overtime costs associated with conducting these traffic enforcement campaigns.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that the Lake County Sheriff's Office is authorized and hereby directed to apply for the Illinois Department of Transportation STEP Grant in the amount of $113,013.20.
