Special recognition commending the Lake County Auxiliary Deputy Unit for their dedicated and valuable service to the Lake County Sheriff's Office and the residents of Lake County.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, in the late 1970’s, concerned citizens organized to patrol neighborhoods and notify the Sheriff’s Office of suspicious activity; and
WHEREAS, soon after, the citizens issued a request to the Lake County Sheriff to merge into one group and be deputized; and
WHEREAS, 16 members were sworn in as the first Reserve Deputies of Lake County in 1978; and
WHEREAS, today, the Auxiliary Deputy Unit consists of up to 50 dedicated members. They perform valuable services for Lake County communities by volunteering their time to support the Sheriff’s Office during natural and man-made emergencies, traffic and crowd control, searches for missing persons, crime scene evidence search, and to provide assistance to the local municipal police department and charitable organization functions; and
WHEREAS, Auxiliary Deputy recruits initially receive approximately 145 hours of training over a five to six-month period, with refresher training yearly in various areas; and
WHEREAS, men and women volunteer as Auxiliary Deputies out of a sense of community responsibility, and, Auxiliary Deputies worked 11,648.5 hours last year, which would equate to over half a million dollars in salary.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, the County Board does recognize the efforts and contributions of the Lake County Sheriff’s Auxiliary Deputy Unit and commends them for their dedicated and valuable service to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the residents of Lake County.
