R E S O L U T I O N


WHEREAS, one hundred years ago, the first group of recruits reported for training at Naval Station Great Lakes, in Lake County, Illinois, on July 1, 1911. Since then, more than 3.5 million sailors have started their Navy careers there; and

WHEREAS, Naval Station Great Lakes is the largest military installation in Illinois and the largest training station in the Navy, encompassing 1,628 acres, and including 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, the high quality of sailors trained at Naval Station Great Lakes has supported the Navy through World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War and, most recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan); and

WHEREAS, famous Navy heroes-such as the fighting Sullivan Brothers; Master Diver Carl Brashear, subject of the movie "Men of Honor"; and the Golden 13, the Navy's first African-American officers-started their careers at Naval Station Great Lakes. It is also here that countless others, whose identities are not as well known but whose contributions are just as important, embarked on their Navy journey; and

WHEREAS, Naval Station Great Lakes hosts the Navy's only Recruit Training Command, where each year approximately 40,000 men and women complete the requirements to become Navy sailors; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lake County Board recognizes the centennial of Naval Station Great Lakes throughout calendar year 2011; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Lake County Board honors all of the Navy veterans, and the men and women of Naval Station Great Lakes whose continued dedication to the ideals of honor, courage and commitment uphold the legacy of the United States Navy and renews our faith in the power of freedom to prevail over tyranny.
