Joint committee action authorizing the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) to submit an application with the Illinois Department of Transportation for a Distracted Driving Mini Grant in the amount of $12,090.96 for fiscal year (FY) 2018.

 

Staff Summary

                     The Illinois Department of Transportation Distracted Driving Mini Grant (Grant), in the amount of $12,090.06, funds distracted driving enforcement campaigns to maximize roadway safety.

                     Traffic enforcement campaigns conducted by deputies will enforce Illinois Phone Use Laws that will remind drivers that distracted driving in unsafe.

                     If awarded, the Grant will require a two-week, high visibility distracted driving crackdown between April 16 - April 30, 2018. A total of 14 enforcement details (7 during the day, 7 during the night) will be conducted, which amounts to 168 hours of distracted driving enforcement.

RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, distracted driving has created a challenge for law enforcement; by conducting distracted driving campaigns the LCSO goal is to save lives and reduce injuries,

 

WHEREAS, the LCSO believes that conducing distracted driving enforcement campaigns in FY2018 we will continue to keep the roadways safe; and,

 

WHEREAS, said grants will fund the overtime costs associated with conducting these distracted driving enforcement campaigns.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that the LCSO is authorized and hereby directed to apply for the Illinois Department of Transportation Distracted Driving Grant in the amount of $12,090.96.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that if said grant is approved and awarded to the LCSO by the Illinois Department of Transportation, it will be brought back to the Lake County Board for acceptance and grant dollars considered for approval as an emergency appropriation.
