Title

Draft Ordinance controlling the use of fertilizer containing phosphorus.

Staff Summary

One of the fifteen recommendations developed by the Technical advisory Group (TAG) for the proposed expansion of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) was to adopt a County wide ordinance that restricts the use of phosphorous containing fertilizers.

Similar ordinances that restrict phosphorous containing fertilizers have been adopted by the Villages of Vernon Hills, Antioch, Third Lake, Lindenhurst, Round Lake Park and Round Lake Beach.

The restricted use of phosphorus is a measure intended to protect water quality and the condition of lakes, streams and ponds, which can become overcome with algae as phosphorous washes into them.

This draft ordinance is being circulated to all TAG members and members of the PW & T committee for review and discussion.
