SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, September 15 to October 15 is recognized as National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month as a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and
WHEREAS, National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is a time to honor the invaluable ways Hispanic and Latinx people have contributed to our nation and our communities; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic and Latinx soldiers played a major role in defending the country during war. Bernardo de Galvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana in 1777, played a key role in General George Washington’s battles against British soldiers. Somewhere between 250,000 and 500,000 Hispanic and Latinx soldiers fought the Axis powers in World War II; and
WHEREAS, before Brown v. Board of Education, there was Mendez v. Westminster, a federal court case in 1946-1947 that prohibited segregation of Mexican American students in California’s public schools; and
WHEREAS, Lake County honors the Hispanic and Latinx experience, and celebrates their diverse cultures as we work towards a stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous society for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that September 15, 2023 to October 15, 2023 be recognized as National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month and encourages residents to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans to the county, state, and nation.
