SPECIAL RECOGNITION

WHEREAS, National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America from September 15 to October 15; and

WHEREAS, this time period was chosen due to its historical significance because Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua all declared their independence in September; and

WHEREAS, National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is an important time to honor the invaluable ways Hispanic and Latinx people have contributed to our communities, fueled our economy and enriched our nation in every profession, such as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, medical professionals, entertainers, scientists and public servants; and

WHEREAS, the Hispanic and Latinx presence in America spans centuries, predating European settlers and the formation of the United States, and they've helped shape our nation since the Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, according to the US. Census Bureau, the current Hispanic and Latinx population in the United States is over 60 million, making up more than 19% of the total population; and

WHEREAS, in Lake County, the Hispanic and Latinx population is estimated to be 24% of the county's population, which is over 170,000 residents; and

WHEREAS, Lake County honors the Hispanic and Latinx experience by celebrating their diverse cultures from numerous countries with an array of local events, including the Viva La Independencia parade with food, music, and entertainment, and Fiesta Sin Frontera, which showcases Mexican traditions, both held in Waukegan, a Latinx art display and featured movies at the College of Lake County, special programming at various Lake County Park Districts and a daylong celebration of Mexican culture at Ravinia.
