Resolution recognizing and commending Sheriff's Marine Patrol Deputies Mike Shep and Mike Rompala for their heroic actions in rescuing a woman injured in a boating accident.

WHEREAS, on August 15, 2009, there was a serious accident involving two boats on Nippersink Lake; and
WHEREAS, two of the three passengers were able to swim clear of the overturned boat, and the third passenger, Brenda Schmid, was seriously injured in the crash and did not surface from under the boat; and
WHEREAS, without hesitation and regard for his personal safety, boater Jason Bathje jumped into the water and swam under the boat, pulling Brenda Schmid from under the boat to the surface, and maneuvering her toward the Sheriff's Marine Patrol boat, where Sheriff's Marine Patrol Deputies Mike Shep and Mike Rompala immediately began CPR; and
WHEREAS, due to the lifesaving measures of Deputies Shep and Rompala, Ms. Schmid was revived and raced to shore where Fox Lake paramedics took over medical intervention and treatment, resulting in Ms. Schmid being admitted to Northern Illinois Medical Center with serious injuries.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that Sheriff's Marine Patrol Deputies Mike Shep and Mike Rompala be recognized, commended and honored for their actions in saving the life of Brenda Schmid; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we are indeed grateful for the unselfish actions of Deputies Shep and Rompala, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to them for their heroic efforts on August 15, 2009.
