Resolution recognizing and commending the Lake County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Unit for their dedicated and valuable service to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the residents of Lake County.

WHEREAS, the Reserve Deputy Unit started under the neighborhood watch program with citizen band radios in the late 1970’s patrolling neighborhoods and notifying the Sheriff’s Office of suspicious activity; and
WHEREAS, soon after, they made a plea to the Lake County Sheriff to merge as one group and to be deputized; and
WHEREAS, 16 original members were sworn in in 1978 as the first Reserve Deputies and the unit today consists of 50 members who must volunteer at least 140 hours of service to the citizen’s of Lake County each year; and
WHEREAS, every Reserve Deputy receives basic training in excess of 130 hours and receives yearly refresher training in a variety of areas; and
WHEREAS, men and women volunteer as Reserve Deputies out of a sense of community responsibility, and last year, volunteers contributed over 9,000 hours to the county for a taxpayer savings of more than $500,000; and
WHEREAS, Reserve Deputies can be seen supplementing various local police departments at summer festivals, helping direct traffic at road hazards and accidents, assisting with evidence searches and helping out in times of declared disasters with the Emergency Management Agency.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois that we do in unison recognize and commend the Lake County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Unit for their dedicated and valuable service to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the residents of Lake County.
