Resolution honoring Eleanor Murkey on the occasion of her retirement after 33 years of service to the College of Lake County’s Lakeshore Campus.
Body
WHEREAS, Eleanor Murkey, Dean of the College of Lake County’s Lakeshore Campus, is retiring after 33 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor Murkey was instrumental in transforming a one-room outreach center started in 1976 into the comprehensive educational facility that the Lakeshore Campus is today; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor Murkey began as the director of the Outreach Center located on Genesee Street with four part-time faculty members who taught Adult Basic Education, GED and ESL courses to almost 300 students; and
WHEREAS, in 1980 the Center moved to the Heins building on Genesee Street, enrollment increased to about 600 students, and the name of the Center was changed to Lakeshore Educational Center; and
WHEREAS, throughout the course of the development of the center, Eleanor Murkey worked with the Lakeshore Advisory Committee and community leaders to champion her cause to expand educational opportunities for residents of northeast Lake County, and as a result, in 1985 the Center earned Campus status and was renamed Lakeshore Campus, now offering degree programs; and
WHEREAS, Lakeshore now offers a full range of academic programs leading to an Associate of Arts degree, and degrees in dental hygiene and medical assisting, and offers comprehensive support services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that we do hereby recognize and commend Eleanor Murkey for her passion and commitment to the community and students; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we are indeed fortunate and honored to have known such an outstanding citizen and public servant; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Lake County Board does hereby extend its best wishes to Eleanor Murkey and her family on the occasion of her retirement as she pursues new challenges and opportunities; and of...
