Staff Summary
• The current property tax redemption fee has been set at the statutory minimum of $3.00 for more than 30 years.
• The Lake County Clerk’s Office, in coordination with the Lake County Finance and Administrative Services Department, completed a study of the cost and fees associated with property tax redemption payments.
• The cost study concluded that the average cost to the County per redemption is $63.
• The Lake County Clerk’s Office and the Finance and Administrative Services Department recommend that the fee be increased from $3.00 to $63.00, effective December 1, 2009.
Body
WHEREAS, the current real property tax redemption fee is set at the statutory minimum of $3.00 and is paid to the County Clerk’s Office upon redemption of delinquent real estate tax payments which have been sold; and
WHEREAS, the Lake County Clerk’s Office, in coordination with the Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) Department, completed a study of the current costs associated with processing requests to redeem real estate property taxes in Lake County, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, the study found the average cost per redemption to be $63; and
WHEREAS, it is the recommendation of the Lake County Clerk’s Office, FAS, the Revenue, Records and Legislation and Finance and Administration Committees that the real property redemption fee be increased to $63.00; and
WHEREAS, it is the joint recommendation of said departments and committees that the above rate become effective December 1, 2009.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that the fee for redeeming property taxes from the Lake County Clerk’s Office shall be $63.00 effective December 1, 2009.
