The LCHD/CHC WIC Program was awarded an additional $11,500 by the Illinois Department of Human Services for the Loving Support Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program for FY 2010. This brings the total FY 2010 award for this important program to $26,500. WIC will continue to enhance the already-existing Loving Support Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program utilizing the full-time and part-time Peer Counselors already on staff. They provide breastfeeding support in the WIC clinic environment, breastfeeding promotion for prenatal clients, one on one counseling services for breastfeeding moms and facilitated group sessions. Funds will be utilized to provide for operational and medical supplies.
Breastfeeding promotion and support continues to be "best practice" and Lake County's breastfeeding initiation (70.6% FY 2009) and duration rates (31.8% FY 2009) are expected to continue to increase with continued peer or "mother to mother" support!
