Special recognition of July 2024 as Disability Pride Month in Lake County.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Lake County affirms the principles of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities created by the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure that people with disabilities be fully integrated into the fabric of our society; and
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990, establishing an important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public; and
WHEREAS, people with disabilities make up approximately 13% of the United States’ population representing all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month celebrates people with disabilities, their identities, their culture and their contributions to society; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month seeks to raise awareness and end the stigma of disability and to promote disability as a natural part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can celebrate and take pride; and
WHEREAS, Lake County recognizes and celebrates the equal rights and dignity of disabled people everywhere and reaffirms our commitment to building a world where people with disabilities are treated with dignity, respect, and equality.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois that July 2024 be recognized as Disability Pride Month in Lake County, reaffirming the principles of equality and inclusion; and
BE IT FURTHER RECOGNIZED, that the Lake County Board calls upon residents, employers, schools, and community organizations to remain committed to efforts to fully implement the American Disabilities Act.
