Staff Summary
* The Lake County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) has applied for and been awarded STEP grants since 2013.
* LCSO has applied and was accepted for a FFY23 Illinois Department of Transportation STEP grant in the amount of $175,941.03. The grant period is from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023.
* The grant reimburses the deputies' overtime wage costs and indirect costs on direct salary and wage excluding fringe.
* The main objective of the grant is to conduct specific traffic enforcement details that focus on speeding enforcement, distracted driving enforcement, impaired driving enforcement, and child passenger safety campaigns that will make the roadways safer.
* LCSO will conduct six mandatory enforcement campaigns and all four optional enforcement campaigns.

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, said traffic enforcement campaigns held in Fiscal Year 2022 led to a total of 1,452 citations being issued; 230 of those citations were seat belt violations, 848 were speeding violations, 114 were distracted driving violations, and 24 arrests were made for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or drugs; and,

WHEREAS, the Lake County Sheriff's Office believes that continuing to conduct these traffic and distracted driving enforcement campaigns in Fiscal Year 2023 will continue to keep the roadways safer; and,

WHEREAS, said grants will fund the overtime and indirect costs on direct salary and wage excluding fringe associated with conducting these traffic enforcement campaigns.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that the Lake County Sheriff's Office is authorized to accept the FY23 Illinois Department of Transportation STEP Grant in the amount of $175,941.03.
