Special recognition of May 15 through May 21, 2024 as National Police Week.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, there are approximately 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities throughout the United States, including the dedicated officers of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office; and
WHEREAS, in 2023, there were 57,430 assaults against law enforcement officers, resulting in 17,220 injuries; and
WHEREAS, the FBI reported that 136 law enforcement officers and 25 K9 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2023; and
WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1786, more than 24,000 United States law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, 282 new names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring, reflecting the officers killed in 2023 plus officers who died in previous years, but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now; and
WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy are being honored here today; and
WHEREAS, the Annual Lake County Police Memorial to honor fallen officers and their families was held on May 10, 2024, and U.S. flags were flown at half-staff.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that May 15 through May 21, 2024, is designated as National Police Week in Lake County, Illinois; and
BE IT FURTHER RECOGNIZED, that this County Board publicly salutes the service of the officers within Lake County, and in communities throughout the nation.
