SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual Plus (LGBTQIA+) Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to increase an understanding of their community, and recognize the impact and progress that the LGBTQIA+ community has had on equality and civil rights; and
WHEREAS, the first Pride march was held in New York City on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a protest where the gay community banded together to resist the harassment they’d been subjected to; and
WHEREAS, LGBTQIA+ Americans face discrimination, including hate speech and hate crimes for being who they are and for who they love and there remains much work to do to ensure equality and inclusiveness for every person; and
WHEREAS, Lake County’s strength is rooted in our people and their diversity, and as such, all sexual orientations, genders, races, religions, countries of origin, incomes, and all who live in, work in, and visit Lake County are welcome here; and
WHEREAS, demonstrating the County Board’s commitment to support the dignity, worth, and freedom of the LGBTQIA+ community, the LGBTQIA+ Pride Flag is being flown in Lincoln Plaza at the Lake County Administrative Complex in Waukegan, Illinois to commemorate Pride Month and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED that this County Board of Lake County, Illinois does hereby observe June 2026 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual Plus (LGBTQIA+) Pride Month and encourages all residents to celebrate our great diversity.
