Special recognition of September 2023 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34 and the fourth leading cause of death for ages 35 to 54. Suicide is often the result of mental health conditions affecting people when they are at their most vulnerable; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, suicide claimed the lives of 78 residents of Lake County. Overall, the number of deaths by suicide in our county increased 2.6% from 2021 to 2022, with a significant increase for ages 45 and higher; and
WHEREAS, there are many existing businesses, non-profit organizations, agencies, healthcare providers, and governments currently investing in mental and behavioral health services in Lake County; and
WHEREAS, more investment in suicide prevention, education, and research will prevent the untimely deaths of thousands of Americans, including Lake County residents, each year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RECOGNIZED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that September be recognized as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and those who struggle with suicidal thoughts are encouraged to call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
