Joint resolution authorizing the acceptance of an Illinois Department of Transportation 2019 Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant and an emergency appropriation in the amount of $176,292.24.
Staff Summary
• The Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has applied for and been awarded an Illinois Department of Transportation STEP grant in the amount of $176,292.24. LCSO has received this grant for at least five years.
• The grant period is from October 1, 2018 through September 30, 2019.
• The main objective of the grant is to conduct specific traffic enforcement campaigns that will maximize road safety and provide financial assistance for purchasing traffic enforcement equipment. The Sheriff has not requested any traffic enforcement equipment through this grant application.
• The Sheriff’s Office will complete the six mandatory enforcement campaigns and two optional enforcement campaigns.
• Traffic enforcement campaigns include the following offenses violation types: seatbelt, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.

RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, said safety campaigns held year-to-date fiscal year 2018 have led to a total of 1,235 citations being issued, 486 of those citations were seat belt violations and 30 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests; and,
WHEREAS, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office believes that continuing to conduct these traffic enforcement campaigns in fiscal year 2019 will continue to keep the roadways safe; and,
WHEREAS, said grants will fund the overtime costs associated with conducting these traffic enforcement campaigns.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office accept the Illinois Department of Transportation STEP Grant and the Emergency Appropriation of the Grant Amount of $176,292.24.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the grant revenue in the amount of $176,292.24 from the Illinois Department of Transportation be deposited into account #101- 3001110-45020.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Sheriff’s Office shall be the grant manager for the STEP, and accurate records of all necessary grant compliance requirements shall be kept by the Sheriff’s Office.
