Joint resolution requesting and authorizing an increase to the meeting per diem of the Merit Commission members.
Staff Summary
· The Sheriff Merit Commission is made up of five volunteers appointed by the County Board.
· The Lake County Board establishes per diem compensation for members of the Commission and reimburses reasonable and necessary expenses.
· The current per diem is $50 and has not been increased in over 10 years.
· Members of the Merit Commission recently voted to recommend an increase in the per diem to $80. A review was conducted of comparable per diems of other County boards and other County Merit Commissions.
· The per diem for other area county Merit Commission ranges from $60-$85 per public meeting.
· The Commission's annual budget includes funding to cover the per diem for regularly scheduled meetings and additional funding for unforeseen meetings. This additional funding is sufficient to cover the increased per diem and no additional funding is being requested.

WHEREAS, the Sheriff Merit Commission is made up of five volunteers appointed by the County Board; and
WHEREAS, the Lake County Board establishes per diem compensation for members of the Commission and reimburses reasonable and necessary expenses; and
WHEREAS, the current per diem is $50 and has not been increased in over 10 years; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Merit Commission recently voted to increase the public meeting per diem to $80 per publicly posted meeting, bringing it in line with other Merit Commissions; and
WHEREAS, the Commission's annual budget includes funding to cover the per diem for regularly scheduled public meetings and unforeseen public meetings and is sufficient to cover the increased per diem; and
WHEREAS, Lake County Board approval is required to increase the public meeting per diem to $80.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, that an increased in the Sheriff Merit Commission per diem is authorized.
